Mentorship Connection 2022

Goals:

AWIS East Bay will be hosting a mentorship program with the goals to provide fresh career perspectives for an evolving workforce, to create a network of support for scientists at all levels of their careers, and to generate informed, skilled, and confident leaders.

How our mentorship model works:

The mentorship program will expand on the traditional two-way mentorship model, what we are calling a “Learning Group”. A Learning Group acknowledges that knowledge flows not only from mentor to mentee, but from mentee to mentor, and peer-to-peer.

A Learning Group consists of 2-4 participants who have interest in discussing topics of common professional interests. We hope each Learning Group member will celebrate the diversity of viewpoints and experiences and enjoy the opportunity to share experiences and give advice on everything from personal challenges to professional topics.

Who should participate:

People from all disciplines, genders, career levels, and US locations are invited to participate!  You must be 18 and older to participate.

Time Commitment:

June:

- Speed-networking event on July 7th from 5:30-6:30pm PT on Zoom

- Kick-off event on July 13th from 5:30-6:30pm PT on Zoom (mandatory)

July - September:  Monthly meet-ups with mentorship learning groups scheduled on your own time, at your own pace, virtual or in-person.

October:  A finale event (e.g., panel discussion, presentation, workshop, BBQ). Date and time TBD.

Monthly Group Meetings:

Besides the 3 events above, Learning Groups are expected to have a discussion once per month. Each Learning Group  group is self-directed, deciding when, where, and how often to meet. Some groups may decide to meet over breakfast or lunch, others may meet in the evenings or for dinner or wine tastings. Virtual meetings can also be organized if they may be more convenient or because of COVID safety concerns. We will send out suggested topics and guides. These meetings can be about anything, but some themes may include:

   - Career planning

   - Transitioning careers

   - Maintaining a work/life balance

   - Managing a team/department

   - Leading/running a company

   - Entrepreneurship

   - Raising capital

If you have any questions about the program, please email us! rossiter@berkeley.edu and amy.becker@ucsf.edu

Upcoming Events:

July 7th Speed Networking (5:30-6:30pm PST, Zoom)

At this online event, interested individuals will meet to get to know each other through small break-out room meetings. At the end of the event, participants will be asked to submit their top three choices of learning partner(s). Participants will first get a very special welcome from Adrienne Popeney, Director of the Affiliate Network at MENTOR:  The National Mentoring Partnership.

July 13th Mandatory Kick-Off Event (5:30-6:30 PST, Zoom)

Most of the meetings will be self-scheduled and self-guided, but the first Learning Group meeting will be facilitated by AWIS East Bay. At this event, participants will meet their learning group participants, go over group agreements, and learn more about the structure of the summer ahead.

Monthly meetings (email, phone, in person). Meet as a group once per month. We will send out suggested topics and guides.

October Finale: We will hold a virtual finale/social event in October.
