March Chapter Meeting At Novartis

East Bay AWIS  is pleased to present Thursday, March 28, 2013

Roopa Ramamoorthi, PhD, PMP

Associate Director, Partnering & Scientific Affairs,  BIOVentures for Global Health

WIPO Re:Search – Sharing Innovation in theFight Against Neglected Diseases

Neglected tropical diseases, tuberculosis and malaria affect more than 1.4 billion people.  This health statistic in turn affects mortality and the ability to earn a livelihood and function effectively in school. Often affected people live in abject poverty and sometimes in conflict zones. And some so called tropical diseases are now being seen here in the United States.

WIPO Re:Search is an initiative launched over a year ago to share innovation in the fight against neglected diseases. It consists of a consortium led by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in partnership with BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH), several leading pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions and research organizations world-wide to share innovation in the fight against neglected diseases.   http://www.wipo.int/research/en/

BIOVentures for Global Health (BVGH) is focused on the 19 neglected tropical diseases on WHO’s list as well as malaria and tuberculosis. As the Partnership hub administrator, BVGH works with members to identify collaboration opportunities of mutual interest and facilitates communication between members to explore and establish collaborations. http://www.bvgh.org/Biopharmaceutical-Solutions/WIPO-ReSearch/Partnership-Hub.aspx.

Dr. Ramamoorthi will speak about the initiative and share examples of collaboration agreements developed between members since the launch of the initiative.

Dr. Ramamoorthi joined BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH) in November 2011 as Manager, Scientific Affairs, with an extensive background in drug development, bacteriology, biotechnology, and engineering. Prior to joining BVGH, Dr. Ramamoorthi was a senior research analyst with the consulting firm Strategic Perspectives. Before that, Dr. Ramamoorthi worked with Bayer Corporation for more than five years, during which she served as a scientist and senior scientist, developing purification processes for antibodies and other complex proteins and bringing in platform technologies.

Dr. Ramamoorthi received her Ph.D. in biochemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Washington and at MIT. She is a registered patent agent and holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. A native of India, where she received her B.S. in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai, Dr. Ramamoorthi brings a developing world perspective to her professional endeavors.
